Frequently asked questions
Claims
Q: How many birds may I claim at once?
A: One. The only exception is if you are re-claiming multiple birds that were removed from the list; in that case, please re-claim any bird(s) you had before.Q: May I claim a non-existent bird?
A: No. Birds must be alive in real life, or extinct. You may have the chance to make or own a non-existent bird through special events or giveaways.Q: How long do I need to wait before I can make another claim?
A: You may only make another claim 14 days (two weeks) after you have posted a reference for your previous claim. This is not the same as waiting 14 days after you have commented a claim.Q: Why don’t I see my claim on the list?
A: The list most likely has not been updated with recent claims yet. The date for when the masterlist was last updated can be found at the top of document in red text. If you see that the list has been updated since making your claim, and your claim was not added, please notify @vile.serpent on Instagram.Your claim may have also been removed if you have been inactive for a long time, or if you changed your username without notifying and thus can no longer be found. If this is the case, please re-claim your bird(s) on the claiming post. Please specify that you are re-claiming because someone may have claimed that bird after yours was taken off the list. You will be allowed to re-claim that same bird and the character associated with it.NOTE: if your claim expired before you made a reference to validate your claim, and someone else made a claim for that bird after yours was removed, you will not be allowed to re-claim!Q: I see that multiple people have claims for the same bird, so why was my claim denied?
A: There are special cases where multiple claims are allowed. One is if a user returns from a long hiatus and needs to re-claim their bird(s), but those claims were taken by someone else after they were originally removed during a masterlist clear-out. It is not fair to force anyone to have to delete their characters, so this is an instance where multiple people can have a claim on the same bird.Another instance is if a certain species has different standardized breeds or phenotypes. Chickens, for example, are all one species despite there being numerous different breeds. Cockatiels are an example of different phenotypes: there is one species of cockatiel, but you can find them as normal grays, pied, lutino, pearl, etcetera. Because these differences are so unique, I will allow people to claim those different breeds or phenotypesQ: I have changed my mind about a claim I’ve made, what do I do?
A: Reply to the original claim comment you made on the claiming post explaining that you’d like the change the bird you are claiming, and specify what your new claim is. You must wait for the new claim to be verified before designing. If you wish to remove your claim, you may delete your comment. Do not DM about changing claims, this is something that must be done on the claiming post only.Q: Can I make a claim for someone else?
A: No.Q: Can I claim a bird for someone else if I intend to give them the character as a gift?
A: Yes; this is a special circumstance where you may claim a bird for someone else; however, you must claim the bird as if claiming it for yourself, which means you must have availability (e.g., if you haven’t made a reference for a claim you’ve made earlier, you will not be able to claim). Please DM @vile.serpent on Instagram with the username of who you intend to gift the Bird Fury to so that the list can be updated accordingly.Q: Someone else is designing my Bird Fury for me; who should make the claim?
A: You (the person who will own the character) must make the claim.
References
Q: What counts as a reference when making a Bird Fury?
A: You do not need to make a full reference sheet in order to secure your claim; one colored full-body drawing will suffice, as long as it accurately shows the design of the character and includes the wings and fins.Q: Can I use a base for making my reference?
A: Yes, as long as you have permission from the original artist to use their base, you may use it. Make sure you are allowed to edit the original lineart to be able to follow the species guidelines, and always give proper credit!Q: Am I allowed to make my Bird Fury an albino/melanistic/mutated version of the bird I claimed?
A: Sure! As long as mutations only affect the coloration of the character.
Other
Q: I would like to give my Bird Fury family members / cubs; is this allowed?
A: Yes! However, you will need to make appropriate claims for each of these. You may have non-canon characters, but please do not post them publicly if they have not been created through claims.Q: May I draw Bird Furies as background characters for my art / comic?
A: Yes. These characters do not need to be claimed as long as they are merely background fodder. I would encourage you to reach out to the community and see if anyone would want their character inserted, however!Q: Are Bird Furies an open or closed species?
A: Bird Furies are an open species; however, they may be temporarily closed if I need a break from managing claims / the list or if I go on hiatus.
